Inexpensive Treatment for Autoimmune Diseases
As more and more information is coming out on the human genome and the human microbiome I have slowly moved my practice to a more food/herbal based practice and less of synthetic supplements. It seems the more we know the more we don’t know. So I for one have decided to primarily stick with what the body has known for centuries. Going back to old Hippocrates, “ Let food be thy medicine and medicine by thy food.”
So it is looking like using good ole Arm and Hammer Baking Soda might just help reduce the destructive inflammatory effects of autoimmune diseases. Researchers showed that when rats or healthy folks drink a bit of baking soda and water it stimulates the body to produce an anti-inflammatory response. It looks like it takes two weeks. of therapy to change the inflammatory make up from pro inflammation to anti-inflammation in your spleen which plays a pertinent role in the human immune response. Further, it seems to have positive impacts all over the body and especially in the blood as well as kidneys. The study’s author, Dr. Paul O’Connor is suggesting that taking a daily dose can slow the progression of kidney disease. They also noticed that the immune system was pushed towards the T regulatory arm which keeps the body from attacking its own tissues.
At it’s most basic level this study points to having your system run toward an alkaline ph seems to have a positive impact on inflammatory mechanisms all over the body. This points to a diet rich multi-colored vegetables with limited acid-forming foods like processed foods, alcohol and sugars can lead to a down-regulation of pro-inflammatory diseases like autoimmune and kidney disease. And if they get the better of you maybe you should consider an apple a day along with a glass of baking soda and water!
